Stories We Tell Ourselves
Group Exhibition | On view Jul 18, 2026.This exhibition departs from a quiet but devastating contradiction: women are essential and irreplaceable in society, yet this half of our species remains marginalized by the very society they sustain. The narratives women inherit about femininity and moral duty function as a social mechanism, a way to administer and manage the very discontent this subordination creates. For generations, women have inherited different forms of enduring the suffering: how to dress a wound and call it growth, how to forgive the unforgivable, and how to carry humiliation with grace. Yet, when the inevitable exhaustion with this script arrives, the script flips, and offers only a different trap. The new command to be angry, toxic, ugly-cool, or an impenetrable “Ice Queen” merely trades passive submission for a hyper-vigilant defense. Whether performing soft compliance or weaponized self-protection, women are still living by scripts dictated by a world that refuses to change the baseline of their reality. This is a modern tragedy: even defiance arrives as another administered form.
