YIYO TIRADO-RIVERA
Born San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1990 · Lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Yiyo Tirado-Rivera is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice examines the political, material, and aesthetic construction of the Caribbean landscape, with particular attention to Puerto Rico. Working across sculpture, installation, photography, painting, and design, he explores how architecture, tourism, public space, and economic development shape ideas of territory and identity.
His work engages Puerto Rico’s colonial history and the transformation of the island through the visitor economy, often appropriating familiar cultural and architectural codes to expose the systems embedded within them. Tirado-Rivera holds a BFA from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico and is co-founder and co-director of El Kilómetro in San Juan. His work has been presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Americas Society, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, and Jameel Arts Centre.
Tirado-Rivera has exhibited in numerous institutional spaces in: Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Chile, the United States, Spain, and the Dominican Republic. Most recently his work is included in Guest Relations exhibition curated by Murtaza Vali presented at the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai and in the critically acclaimed exhibit No existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane María (2022-2023), curated by Marcela Guerrero and presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, and Tropical is Political curated by Marina Reyes Franco and presented at the Americas Society in New York and at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC-PR).
